Physical Education
‘Physical fitness is not only the one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity’

Intent – what we teach?
Physical Education at Chantry develops the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform a range of physical activities with competence and confidence. Physical Education promotes a fondness for exercise and competition whilst building an understanding of how our bodies work.
Key Stage One children will have the opportunity to develop their fundamental motor skills, including balance, agility, and coordination both working individually and with others.
In Key Stage Two children will continue to improve and apply a broader range of skills, linking them to make actions and sequences in a variety of activities and games. This will run alongside the advancement of understanding tactical and analytical knowledge while performing.
Key Stage Two pupils will also learn to swim competently, confidently, and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres. They will use a range of strokes effectively and performance safe self-rescue in different water-based scenarios.
Children at Chantry will learn these skills in a safe environment, working in a cooperatively and progressive manner. We will promote a resilient and growth mind-set while facing challenges set both in lessons and during competitive scenarios.

Impact – what impact is our teaching having?
Physical Education at Chantry provides children with a healthy mental and physical lifestyle whilst being taught a range of skills across the curriculum to reach age related targets and expectations. Children will experience a range of sports through their lessons, developing confidence to compete, perform and gain the social skills they can use both in and out of school.
At Chantry, we are proud to be ‘Sainsbury’s School Games Gold standard school’, showing that we are offering a high standard of education to all our pupils along with offering enjoyable competition and extra-curricular activities.
Over the past few years, we have also been able to develop our greater depth pupils into country level performers in several curriculum areas, alongside county winning teams including indoor athletics and dodgeball.
